Susan Morrow, una mercante d’arte di Los Angeles, conduce una vita agiata ma vuota insieme al marito Hutton Morrow. Durante un weekend, mentre Hutton è via per un viaggio di lavoro, Susan trova un pacco inaspettato nella cassetta delle lettere. È un romanzo intitolato Nocturnal Animals, scritto dal suo ex marito, Edward che incoraggia Susan a leggere il libro e a chiamarlo durante la sua visita in città. Nel suo letto, di notte, Susan è molto colpita dalla scrittura di Edward e non può fare a meno di ricordare i momenti più intimi della loro storia d’amore. Cercando di guardare dentro se stessa oltre la superficie patinata della sua esistenza, Susan vede sempre più chiaramente come quel libro sia il racconto di una vendetta, che la costringe a rivalutare completamente le scelte fatte e a risvegliare in lei la capacità di amare quello che temeva di aver perso, mentre la storia procede verso una resa dei conti che riguarderà sia l’eroe del romanzo che lei. “Nocturnal Animals è un racconto che esorta a confrontarsi con le scelte che facciamo nel corso della vita e sulle conseguenze delle nostre decisioni. Il suo primo lungometraggio, A Single Man, con Colin Firth e Julianne Moore, ricevette riconoscimenti importanti: Colin Firth vinse la Coppa Volpi alla 66 Mostra del Cinema di Venezia e una nomination all’Academy Award per il miglior attore protagonista. Il film Nocturnal Animals è ispirato al romanzo “Tony and Susan” di Austin Wright.
Austerlitz (Sergei Loznitsa) FUORI CONCORSO: Vi sono, in Europa, luoghi che sopravvivono come dolorose memorie del passato, fabbriche in cui gli esseri umani sono stati ridotti in cenere. Oggi questi siti sono luoghi del ricordo che, aperti al pubblico, accolgono migliaia di turisti ogni anno. Il film, ispirato all’omonimo romanzo di W.G. Sebald dedicato all’Olocausto, si concentra sui visitatori di questo luogo del ricordo creato sull’area di un precedente campo di concentramento. Sergei Loznitsa, regista, sceneggiatore e produttore bielorusso ha già firmato la regia di diciotto documentari ottenendo un successo internazionale. I suoi due lungometraggi Schaste moe (2010) e V umane (2012) furono proposti in prima mondiale a Cannes, dove V tumane ricevette il premio FIPRESCI.
Safari (Ulrich Seidl) FUORI CONCORSO: In Africa, turisti tedeschi e austriaci ogni anno vanno in vacanza per cacciare nelle distese selvagge, dove antilopi, impala, zebre, gnu e altre creature pascolano a migliaia. Guidando nel bush, si appostano, braccando le loro prede, sparano, singhiozzano per l’eccitazione e si mettono in posa davanti agli animali che hanno catturato. Un film sulle vacanze che parla della pratica di uccidere, un film che racconta la natura umana. Con Safari, Seidl cerca di raccontare i ricchi, gli aristocratici, gli sceicchi che praticano la caccia grossa in Africa e rapportarli al cacciatore comune. Da molti anni infatti, cacciare in Africa è diventato alla portata del cittadino occidentale. Si ricerca quindi, una scoperta, mostrando cosa spinge queste persone a cacciare, e perché ne possono addirittura diventare ossessionate: uccidere come piacere, senza mai affrontare il pericolo, uccidere come una sorta di liberazione emotiva. Ulrich Seidl è un regista, autore e produttore. Ha iniziato la sua carriera girando documentari, ma il primo grande lungometraggio fu Hundstage, che vinse il premio speciale della giuria alla mostra del cinema di Venezia nel 2001. Tra i suoi più grandi successi si ricordano i film Import/Export, Im Keller e la trilogia PARADIES.
